William Kopelk

Landscape architect and interior designer; preservation activist

“I first visited Palm Springs in 1997 with Beth and Brent Harris on the occasion of Beth’s birthday, to view the progress of their [iconic Richard Neutra–designed] Kaufmann House. I was hired by the Harrises to design a garden at Kaufmann and project manage their home here. After that project was complete, I could tell there was an awareness of potential in terms of redoing homes and gardens here. People’s awareness is now focused on low water and sustainability. The understanding of global warming and its adverse effect upon our environs demands that people take a proactive stance in how they make choices about landscape.

“I like the indoor/outdoor concept of living here, hence the name of my landscape design company: InsideOutside. I think the desert is great for nine months of the year, but being a landscape architect here for sixteen years, I feel there are three months that should be avoided! I think the mountains have a presence here that is powerful through the ever-changing look of them depending upon the light of day. It is a dramatic and harsh landscape to be sure. The beauty is in its drama.”
